Adventures in Anime

So this weekend marks the first time in two months I have ventured out alone on a Saturday night. Well, make that Saturday evening.

I started with a simple goal in mind: entertain myself outside the apartment rather than in it. The former is usually the method I choose when "Sudden Adventure Mood" makes a an appearance. Albeit a rare one.

In Nashville, there was the Nashville Scene. In Oklahoma City there is the Oklahoma Gazette. I turned to the "Hey - Do This!" section for some amusement while Jamba Juice whipped up some $4.15 Orangey Vitamin concoction.

I strolled down to Oklahoma City (or up if North is upward to you) to grab some dinner prior to the 8:00pm showing of Steamboy (more on that in a minute). My original plan had a prompt 5:45pm arrival at Cattlemans Steakhouse to satisfy a craving. Only two times have I tasted a full New York Strip which brought me to the verge of transcendence; once when I was a small kid and my father was cooking outside the house in Tulsa, and another on my first trip to this fine establishment. By far, the finest steaks in the degenerate city of Oklahoma City are sold at Cattlemans.

But the laws of common order would work against me. Cattlemans would be boasting an hour wait, and I would be the subject of many a glare taking up a table for four, with only one at the table. Steak mission aborted.

Driving around for about half an hour only yielded more frustration. Finally, circling back around Walker Ave back into Downtown, I noticed La Luna Mexican Cafe. Having seen a review in the Oklahoma gazette, I swerved into an alley and over to a parking space. No wait, no fuss. I was seated in minutes and greeted by a lacky with a fruit tea and chips.

Dinner would not be a disappointment. Pola Chicken was the pick of the day, upon suggestion from Senior dissatisfaction himself, I gobbled the plate down in mere tens of minutes, leaving plenty of time for an hour long wait at the movie theatre; which happens to be connected to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

The Noble Theatre is not your typical locale for out of band movies and documentaries. I was very impressed with the crowd, or lack thereof. And also the cleanliness, which is important if you don't enjoy sitting in some kids puke pile from the 4:00pm showing.

Steamboy is an Japanese Anime about a young boy, his father and his father's father. Each are inventors, although the story labels them scientists. I won't divulge any plot information not because I want to you to experience it and avoid a spoiler; but simply because there wasn't any. This film is sort of considered Otomo's true successor to Akira, a film itself which was considered the opening gateway to Manga in the Western World. While I won't compare, or provide analysis you could obtain from your neighborhood Otaku, I will say that consistent storylines are not one of the strong suits. Allow yourself to be totally suspended from reality - because it's the only way you're going to enjoy this film.

Magnificently drawn and colored, it's truly breathtaking. The showing was in full subtitles, some of them poor. But I stop my criticisms there; it's worth every penny if your an Anime fan. Nothing makes sense, but this is a animated film, you think Dumbo made any?
